Responsible Government

"I believe in a limited, accountable government that exists to serve the people, not the other way around. Taxpayers and small business owners work hard for every dollar they earn, and they deserve a government that respects that effort by using public funds wisely and efficiently.

Too often, government grows beyond its core mission, creating unnecessary expenses and burdens that fall on families and job creators.  I believe our taxes are already high enough and we must be disciplined about how public money is spent.

At the same time, I recognize that local government plays an essential role in providing fundamental services that allow our communities to thrive. Safe neighborhoods, reliable infrastructure, and a justice system that protects the innocent and holds criminals accountable are not luxuries, they are core government responsibilities.

My approach is simple:

  1. Focus government on what truly matters;
  2. Eliminate waste and inefficiencies;
  3. Protect taxpayers; and
  4. Deliver strong, effective Public Safety."

Mike Reed's life has been defined by service, leadership, and a deep commitment to protecting his community.

A graduate of Anderson High School, Mike answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.  Rising to the rank of sergeant before receiving an Honorable Discharge, Mike developed the discipline, resilience, and leadership skills that would shape his career in public safety.

After returning home, Mike served briefly as a guard at the Pendleton Reformatory, gaining firsthand experience in the corrections system.  But his lifelong dream was always to become a police officer. In January 1977, Mike joined the Anderson Police Department.

Over a distinguished 31-year career, Mike spent the majority of his time in the patrol division - the front line of policing.  There, he built a reputation for steady leadership, sound judgment, and a calm presence in high-pressure situations. Through the years, his dedication and professionalism earned him promotions to the rank of lieutenant. Mike also served on the department's SWAT team for 25 years.

Beyond his operational roles, Mike was elected president of the local Fraternal Order of Police chapter, where he spent five years advocating for officers and strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the community.

In 2005, Mike was selected to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia - a program reserved for proven law enforcement leaders.

After retiring from APD in 2008, Mike brought his real-world law enforcement experience to the private sector, helping launch Guardian Tracking, a technology company that develops software solutions to support public safety operations.

Mike retired for a second time in 2021 and now serves on the Edgewood Town Council.

Mike and his wife, Nancy, have been married for 35 years. They have two adult children and six granddaughters.

The couple enjoy traveling and spending time with family, and in recent years they have hosted several exchange students from Europe. They attend Mercy Road Church.
